How to Convert kWh to Wh: Formula and Examples
Battery capacity and electricity consumption are often expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh), especially for home batteries, electric vehicles, and larger energy-storage systems.
Smaller batteries and portable power stations, however, are often rated in watt-hours (Wh).
Converting between the two is simple:
Wh = kWh × 1,000
So a 5kWh battery contains:
5 × 1,000 = 5,000Wh

The kWh to Wh Formula
To convert kilowatt-hours into watt-hours, multiply by 1,000:
Watt-hours (Wh) = Kilowatt-hours (kWh) × 1,000
This works because:
1kWh = 1,000Wh
For example:
0.5kWh × 1,000 = 500Wh
1kWh × 1,000 = 1,000Wh
2.5kWh × 1,000 = 2,500Wh
10kWh × 1,000 = 10,000Wh
The underlying amount of energy does not change. Only the unit used to express it changes.
Why Some Batteries Use kWh Instead of Wh
Wh and kWh both measure energy, but different scales are more convenient for different products.

A home battery might instead be described as:

Writing a 13.5kWh battery as 13,500Wh is technically correct, but kWh is easier to read and compare at that scale.

5 × 1,000 = 5,000Wh

Electric Vehicle Battery Examples
Electric vehicle batteries are usually rated in kWh because their capacities are much larger than those of phones, laptops, or portable power stations.
A relatively small EV battery might have:
40kWh
Converted to Wh:
40 × 1,000 = 40,000Wh
A larger battery might have:
75kWh
which becomes:
75 × 1,000 = 75,000Wh
And a 100kWh battery becomes:
100 × 1,000 = 100,000Wh
Wh is rarely used on EV specification sheets because those numbers become unnecessarily large. But the conversion is still useful when comparing an EV-size battery with smaller energy-storage systems.
Portable Power Example
The same calculation also works with decimal kWh values.
Suppose a portable power station is described as having 2.048kWh of nominal capacity.
Convert it to Wh:
2.048 × 1,000 = 2,048Wh
So:
2.048kWh = 2,048Wh

A Quick Decimal-Shift Method
Because you are multiplying by 1,000, you can often convert kWh to Wh by moving the decimal point three places to the right.
For example:
0.5kWh → 500Wh
1.2kWh → 1,200Wh
2.048kWh → 2,048Wh
13.5kWh → 13,500Wh
This shortcut is simply another way of performing the same multiplication.
kWh Is Energy, Not Power
Do not confuse kWh with kW.
A kilowatt-hour measures energy.
A kilowatt measures power.

5kW can describe how much power a system can deliver at one moment.
Although power and energy are related, converting kWh to Wh does not calculate battery runtime or output capability.
